Book Launch: The Charter for Children
Dearest friends, family members and blog readers,
For the past five years I’ve been working on a sizeable project and I’m excited to finally share some of the results with you.
After my first year of studies at McGill Law, I had a strong desire to make young children aware of their basic rights. Noticing a lack of educational materials addressing this topic, I decided to commence a project – adapting the principles and values espoused in The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms into a child-friendly book series. Although I had assumed the project would take a year or two to complete, I had underestimated the full scope of the undertaking. Five years later, and upon the Charter’s thirtieth anniversary, the first six books in the The Charter for Children series are in print.
Each story in the 14-book collection addresses a different right or freedom in the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Each is also set in a different province or territory of the country (and one in the nation’s capital). Working with the wonderful team at DC Canada Education Publishing Company, we’re all excited to share the first stories with the public.
I’m hoping that you may join me at either of the following events to launch the series:
Provincial Launch
The Landing
Tyne Valley, PEI
Saturday, May 12th at 2:00 p.m.
National Launch
Ottawa Public Library, Main Branch
Ottawa, Ontario
Saturday, May 26th at 11:00 a.m.
For more information on the series, you can visit DC Canada Education, or download this preview booklet.

Thanks so much Elizabeth – its been a long while. I hope you’ve been keeping well.
Wow Dustin, this is amazing! I am definitely looking to add these books to my kids collections….just wondering are they by chance going to be published in french too and maybe find there way into our schools???? I think this is definitely an avenue that should be looked at! FYI please have them translate them into a child friendly french so young children are able to understand and not a literal translation where the meaning is all lost in the big words! Just a suggestion, but I for one would use them in my classroom! 🙂 Congrats!
Congratulations Dustin! it was great seeing you in PEI.
So wish we could be at your book launch but know Brian and I are so proud of you and this great accomplishment. I’m thrilled to have been your professional photographer for the “about the author” portrait.
Wishing you great success with these books!
Great seeing you while you were home Charlene – and appreciate that you could be a part of the project!
